Heritage Week Draws Near

For nearly thirty years we have been researching and addressing the Cromwell chapter of history, seeking healing for the injustices that still echo today. This work has taken us across the British Isles, Ireland, and eventually Barbados — where, in the 17th century, so many were transported and forgotten. Much of that journey is shared in my latest book, I Heard Their Cry.
But the story didn’t end there.
Last year, with the help of the late Dr Janet Craven, we discovered that a memorial plaque in Lackagh, County Kildare - listing the names of those sent to Barbados by Cromwell’s men - had been restored. It was an unexpected and deeply moving moment. They were not forgotten.
We knew we needed to reconnect this part of history, to honour those who suffered, and to ensure their descendants are seen and remembered. As we shared the story, doors began to open - and this month we have been invited to speak at three Heritage Week events.
