Northern Ireland, Dublin, and meeting the Ambassador

Despite the weather, our journey brought deep conversations, new relationships, and renewed purpose

Dear friends,

Despite rain, wind, and even a touch of snow, we received a warm welcome by our hosts Kelvin and Evaline McCracken. This welcome continued that evening at the ‘First Presbyterian ladies’ group’ and again Tuesday by Margaret Clarke and those attending Prayers for Stormont in the Senate Room. On both occasions many showed a genuine interest in the story and in the lives of the descendants. This reminds us why this work matters. Their enthusiasm was truly encouraging.

On Wednesday we travelled to Dublin. Firstly, we met with Elizabeth and Edward Fitzpatrick from County Kildare. Edward's father was involved in the plaque which commemorates those deported by Cromwell being erected in Lackagh in 1959. Elizabeth played a huge part in its restoration and the re-dedication ceremony last year. They were astonished and thrilled to hear of our work in Barbados and would like others to hear this too. I have also been invited to Lackagh by Fr. Liam Merrigan P.P who has Historical material regarding the events at that time. I have no doubt that it’s important to connect with this community, so please pray as we seek to follow this through.

That afternoon we had memorable meeting with His Excellency Cleviston Haynes, the Barbados Ambassador to Ireland. He listened intently as I shared parts of the story and expressed genuine appreciation for the work done over so many years. He also spoke of the many people - himself included - who may have Irish ancestry, and he encouraged us to continue our work.

He also expressed a desire for me to be involved in a video project about the Red Legs and other projects.

His PA, Kendra, shared that she is from Glenburnie, Barbados, and was christened in St Margaret’s - the very place where the memorial stands. What are the chances of that? You couldn’t make it up.

We concluded our time by presenting the Ambassador with the letter of apology to Barbados.

Wishing you all a blessed and joyful Easter

Shirley
